IS 1239 Part 1 plain-end weights for 15–150 NB — Light (A), Medium (B) and Heavy (C), including kg per 6 m trade length.
This MS pipe weight chart lists theoretical plain-end weight in kg per metre for IS 1239 ERW / mild steel pipes from 15 NB to 150 NB across Class A (Light), Class B (Medium) and Class C (Heavy). Weights use the industry formula W = (OD − WT) × WT × 0.02466 (steel density 7850 kg/m³). Example: a 50 NB (2 inch) Medium pipe weighs 5.03 kg/m — one 6 m length is about 30.2 kg.
Worked example for 50 NB Medium: OD = 60.3 mm, WT = 3.6 mm → W = (60.3 − 3.6) × 3.6 × 0.02466 = 5.03 kg/m. Click any NB row for a dedicated page with Class A/B/C detail, pieces per tonne, and GI notes.
Note: Figures are theoretical plain-end MS weights. For non-standard OD or wall, use the steel pipe weight calculator. For live rates see the MS pipe price list.
Each class column shows kg/m and kg per 6 m length. NB links open the size-specific weight page.

Plain-end steel pipe mass per metre is the cross-sectional steel area times density. The trade shortcut used across Indian mills and stockists is:
For 50 NB Medium: (60.3 − 3.6) × 3.6 × 0.02466 = 5.03 kg/m. A 6 m length weighs 30.2 kg. Need a non-standard wall? Use the free weight calculator.
Galvanized (GI) pipe is MS pipe with a zinc coating. Zinc typically adds roughly 3–6% mass over the plain-end MS weight depending on coating class and surface area. Use the MS figures below as the base; for GI orders expect a small uplift, or confirm coated mass on the mill test certificate (MTC).
Chart numbers are theoretical. Mills produce to dimensional tolerances; mass can vary under typical mill tolerance (commonly discussed around ±10% depending on product and PO terms). Always reconcile BOQ estimates against the mill test certificate (MTC) and agreed weighing terms at dispatch — billing follows the actual or theoretical weight basis agreed in your PO, not a reference chart.
