IS 1239 Part 1 sets the tube. Walls on this bore are Light 2.3 mm, Medium 2.6 mm, and Heavy 3.2 mm. Medium and 15 NB Medium share a 2.6 mm wall and still differ in OD and kg/m.
The published kg/m is plain-end theoretical mass. Socketed T&C mass is a separate IS table. Zinc sits on top of the black figure.
20 NB is not 15 NB and not 25 NB. 25 NB Medium jumps to 2.41 kg/m and 14.5 kg per 6 m on the parent chart.

Buy 20 NB when the approved last-mile, terrace, or branch-water drawing names 20 mm NB. A Kanpur Dehat or Unnao bidder should quote the drawing line instead of creating a size hierarchy from habit.
The Meghalaya PHED GI sheet lists 20 mm Medium at 26.5-27.3 mm OD and 2.6 mm wall. That matches this row’s Medium wall. Class still follows the UP package, not a PHED habit from another state.
Do not place 20 NB on a hydrant lateral by reading only the inch name. The site fire BOQ shows larger lateral and hose-reel sizes. CPWD Clause 7.3 specifies mild-steel Heavy C-class pipe within its own wet-riser and sprinkler scope.
Do not treat 20 NB as structural CHS or as IS 4270 casing. Do not treat it as boiler tube. Form III-B is for tubes the boiler drawing names.
An Unnao utility buyer may consider 20 NB only when the approved service drawing names it. Water and air lines can differ from effluent service; media and the project specification decide that split.

Rounding down to stay below 1,000 kg gives 119 Light pieces, 106 Medium pieces, or 89 Heavy pieces. The MS pipe price list holds the black rows for every NB.
A three-quarter-inch line that only says GI pipe and Medium does not identify the standard, OD, zinc requirement, or end condition. Lock each field.
For a worked Unnao take-off, suppose an approved lateral schedule lists 60 lengths of 20 NB Medium at 6 m. One stick is 9.4 kg. Sixty sticks are 60 × 9.4 = 564 kg, which is 0.564 MT.
If loading divides the order into one 40-length group and one 20-length group, their masses are 376 kg and 188 kg. One hundred Medium lengths are 940 kg. Floor(1000 ÷ 9.4) gives 106 sticks below one theoretical tonne, at 996.4 kg.
Nine identical 100-length black groups place 9 × 940 = 8,460 kg, or 8.460 MT, into a vehicle plan. Compare that theoretical tube mass with the site’s 9 MT planning band, then let the carrier allow for restraints and legal loading.
GI on those 100 lengths adds the site 3-6% zinc. Planning coated mass is 940 × 1.03 = 968.2 kg to 940 × 1.06 = 996.4 kg, or 9.68 kg to 9.96 kg per stick.
For the black 100-length line, applying the dated Medium endpoints to 940 kg produces ₹53,580 at ₹57/kg and ₹60,160 at ₹64/kg. The GI masses paired with ₹70/kg and ₹78/kg produce ₹67,774 to ₹77,719.
The 60-length black Medium example is 564 × 57 = ₹32,148 to 564 × 64 = ₹36,096 before GST and freight. The Unnao page places the city about 18 km from the yard, but a delivered offer still needs the destination PIN. File that split on the RFQ.
A receiving team can confuse 20 NB and 25 NB in a mixed load because their profiles look similar. OD is 26.9 mm versus 33.7 mm. A calliper resolves the size.
Medium 20 NB and Medium 15 NB both use a 2.6 mm wall. Weigh the stick: 9.4 kg versus 7.2 kg. Do not accept a half-inch crate against a 20 NB PO.
A Medium stick can vary from 8.46 kg after the 10% deduction to 10.34 kg after the 10% addition. An 8.4 kg stick matches the Light theoretical row and falls below the Medium band; hold it for marking and document checks.
T&C sockets can loosen when a bundle rolls during handling. Count sockets against the length count before the Unnao load is secured.
If a theoretical challan for the 60-length example shows 0.672 MT, the lot was priced as Heavy: Heavy 20 NB is 11.2 kg per stick, while this Medium example totals 0.564 MT.
Clause 9.1(a) on welded Medium wall is + not limited and −10%. The lower limit from a 2.6 mm nominal wall is 2.34 mm. A 2.3 mm reading is below that limit and should put the length on hold; markings and documents still identify its class.
The 10-tonne lot band is ±7.5% on Medium. A 0.564 MT Unnao drop and even a 0.940 MT hundred-length lot stay on the single-tube ±10% rule.
Each tube passes a 5 MPa hydrostatic test, or the eddy-current alternative, under the February 2022 product manual. Ask for the test actually run onto the 20 NB MTC.
IS 4736 coating on 2.3-3.2 mm walls still uses the 360 g/m² amended minimum. Keep the zinc evidence with the tube certificate; paint colour does not establish coating mass.
Part 2 fittings for ¾ inch are a different PO line. Do not bury tees inside the tube tonne.
