Precision tube procurement should define the dimensional tolerance, material grade, supply condition, surface or bore requirement, straightness, length, testing and downstream process. The word “precision” does not by itself define an interchangeable product.
Define the finished component requirement
For hydraulic cylinders, machined parts, automotive components, fabrication, or other close-tolerance work, start with the finished-component drawing or functional requirement. That determines which tube dimensions, tolerances and supply condition need to be quoted.
Specify dimensions and condition
- OD, ID where controlled, and wall thickness.
- Dimensional tolerances and straightness requirements.
- Material grade and supply or heat-treatment condition.
- Required length, cut length, end condition, and quantity.
State surface and processing requirements
If the tube will be honed, skived and roller-burnished, machined, bent, plated, welded, or otherwise processed, state the incoming surface and dimensional requirements needed for that operation. Avoid relying on a generic product name to imply a finished bore or surface condition.
Include testing and documentation in the RFQ
- Required material certificate or inspection-document type.
- Dimensional inspection, mechanical properties, NDT, surface-roughness, or other tests required by the specification.
- Traceability, marking, packing, and corrosion-protection requirements.
- Delivery city, requested date, and any sample or first-article approval requirement.
