Who should order 15 NB in Kanpur
Order 15 NB when the approved plumbing, house-tap, or small-bore water drawing names 15 mm NB. A Kanpur contractor should keep the drawing reference beside the size line.
Meghalaya PHED’s own rural-water note lists 15 mm Medium tube at 21.0-21.8 mm OD and 2.6 mm wall. That document does not select the class for a UP JJM package; the approved UP tender does.
Do not move 15 NB from a plumbing take-off to hydrant duty by analogy. The site fire BOQ shows larger lateral and landing-feed sizes. Approved hydraulic design and the fire specification own each fire-service size.
Do not buy 15 NB as borewell casing. IS 4270 starts at 100 mm NB. An IBR purchase also needs the proper material and form: III-A covers steam pipes, while III-B covers boiler tubes.
Sugar-mill utility benches and printing-shop cooling lines may take 15 NB only when the utility drawing says so. Copy that drawing, not a yard nickname.

Worked 15 NB Medium lot of 100 lengths
Suppose a Kanpur plumbing BOQ lists 100 lengths of 15 NB Medium, each 6 m. One stick is 7.2 kg. The lot is 100 × 7.2 = 720 kg, which is 0.720 MT.
If the packing plan divides that lot into two equal handling groups, each group has 50 lengths and 50 × 7.2 = 360 kg. Floor(1000 ÷ 7.2) gives 138 sticks below one theoretical tonne.
For a truck-planning example, twelve identical 100-length black lots total 12 × 720 = 8,640 kg, or 8.640 MT of tube. The carrier still checks dunnage, axle limits, and the actual loaded mass.
If the same 100 lengths are GI, apply the site 3-6% zinc uplift to 720 kg. Coated planning mass is 720 × 1.03 = 741.6 kg to 720 × 1.06 = 763.2 kg. Per stick that is 7.42 kg to 7.63 kg.
At the 24 May 2026 black Medium endpoints, 720 kg costs ₹41,760 at ₹58/kg and ₹46,800 at ₹65/kg. Pairing the GI planning masses with ₹72/kg and ₹80/kg gives ₹53,395 to ₹61,056.
GST 18% extra applies to the steel line; freight remains a separate delivery input. Send the 15 NB line on the RFQ with class and finish filled.
Receipt mistakes on half-inch pipe
A receiving error can place a 20 NB stick with a half-inch line because both look small in a mixed load. Gauge OD: 21.3 mm versus 26.9 mm.
Light and Medium share that 21.3 mm OD. Wall is the tell. 2.0 mm versus 2.6 mm. Weigh one 6 m stick against 5.7 kg or 7.2 kg.
Clause 9.1(b) allows a single Medium length to sit at 7.2 × 0.90 = 6.48 kg to 7.2 × 1.10 = 7.92 kg. A 5.7 kg stick matches the Light theoretical row and falls below that Medium band; isolate it and check its markings.
A strap placed over threaded ends can crush the first thread. Use end protection and inspect the threads before a Fazalganj pickup leaves.
A black MTC cannot close a GI line. Ask for the galvanising record with the heat when the PO said IS 4736.
Standards that govern 15 NB mass
Clause 8.1 of IS 1239 Part 1 points dimensions and nominal mass to the Light, Medium and Heavy tables, subject to Clause 9. Clause 9.1(b) is the mass rule used above.
On a 10-tonne weighment, Light mass tightens to +7.5% / −5% and Medium or Heavy to ±7.5%. A 0.720 MT house-tap lot stays on the single-tube band.
A 5 MPa hydrostatic test, or eddy-current testing as the alternative, is the product-manual acceptance test. Half-inch tube still carries that test on the MTC.
IS 1239 Part 2 covers sockets and fittings for this bore. Order the tube on Part 1 and the sockets on Part 2 when the BOQ splits them.
CPWD 2020 Clause 7.3 names mild-steel Heavy C-class through 150 mm only within that specification. It does not turn a 15 NB plumbing line into a fire riser; the approved fire drawing remains decisive.
