Sugar-mill utility benches in the Kanpur belt may take 40 NB for wash-water or cooling laterals only when the utility schedule names this bore. Copy the schedule, not a yard nickname.
The site fire-system BOQ starts hose-reel feeds at 50 mm NB and landing-valve takeoffs at 65 mm NB. Do not promote 40 NB onto those fire services because the inch name looks close.
Do not buy 40 NB as IS 4270 casing. Water-well casing on this catalogue begins at 100 mm NB. Do not buy it as honed cylinder stock; Dada Nagar shops stay on their precision pages.

Worked 40 NB Medium lot of 90 lengths
Suppose a Fazalganj plumbing take-off lists 90 lengths of 40 NB Medium, each 6 m. One stick is 21.4 kg. The lot is 90 × 21.4 = 1,926 kg, which is 1.926 MT.
If the packing plan splits that lot into a 50-length group and a 40-length group, the groups weigh 1,070 kg and 856 kg. Floor(1000 ÷ 21.4) gives 46 sticks below one theoretical tonne, at 984.4 kg.
Eight identical 90-length black lots place 8 × 1,926 = 15,408 kg, or 15.408 MT, on a vehicle plan. The haulier still checks dunnage, axle limits, and the scale ticket.
If those 90 lengths are GI, apply the site 3-6% zinc uplift to 1,926 kg. Coated planning mass is 1,926 × 1.03 = 1,983.78 kg to 1,926 × 1.06 = 2,041.56 kg. Per stick that is 22.04 kg to 22.68 kg.
At the 24 May 2026 black Medium endpoints, 1,926 kg costs ₹1,04,004 at ₹54/kg and ₹1,17,486 at ₹61/kg. Pairing the GI planning masses with ₹66/kg and ₹74/kg gives ₹1,30,929 to ₹1,51,075.
Add GST 18% extra on the steel line when you budget the proforma. Freight stays a separate PIN input. Send the 40 NB line on the RFQ with class and finish filled.
Receipt mistakes on 1½-inch pipe
A receiving error can place a 32 NB stick with a 40 NB line because both use a 3.2 mm Medium wall. Gauge OD: 42.4 mm versus 48.3 mm. Weigh the stick: 18.5 kg versus 21.4 kg.
Light and Medium share that 48.3 mm OD. Wall is the tell: 2.9 mm versus 3.2 mm. A calliper on the cut face beats a glance at the colour band.
Clause 9.1(b) allows a single Medium length to sit at 21.4 × 0.90 = 19.26 kg to 21.4 × 1.10 = 23.54 kg. The Light theoretical stick is 19.5 kg, which sits inside that Medium band, so mass alone cannot prove class. Hold a 19.5 kg piece and read its stencil.
A 1½-inch Sch 40 seamless length is a different wall. The schedule chart puts that NPS at 3.68 mm, not 3.2 mm. Reject a schedule stick against an IS 1239 Medium PO.
A black MTC cannot close a GI line. Request the zinc record against the same heat whenever the PO invoked IS 4736.
Standards that govern 40 NB mass
IS 1239 Part 1 Clause 8.1 sends dimensions and nominal mass to the Light, Medium and Heavy tables, then Clause 9 applies. Clause 9.1(b) is the mass rule used on the 19.26-23.54 kg band above.
Once a weighment reaches 10 tonnes, Light mass tightens to +7.5% / −5% and Medium or Heavy to ±7.5%. A 1.926 MT plumbing lot stays on the single-tube band.
The February 2022 product manual accepts each tube by a 5 MPa hydrostatic test, or by eddy-current testing as the alternative leak-tightness check. The 40 NB MTC shows whichever test was run.
Sockets and fittings for this bore sit on IS 1239 Part 2. Split the tube onto Part 1 and the sockets onto Part 2 when the BOQ prices them apart.
The IBR forms index assigns Form III-A to steam pipes, Form III-B to tubes, and Form III-C to boiler mountings and fittings. Those labels do not turn a 40 NB wash-water line into an IBR item.
