ASME SA192 — Seamless Carbon Steel Boiler Tubes
Minimum-wall seamless carbon steel boiler and superheater tubes for high-pressure boiler service.
ASME SA192, also written SA-192 or ASTM A192/A192M when referenced through ASTM, is the standard specification for minimum-wall seamless carbon steel boiler and superheater tubes for high-pressure service. It is a tube standard, not a pipe standard, so buyers should not confuse it with ASTM A106/ASME SA106 seamless pipe. SA192 is ordered by outside diameter and minimum wall thickness, generally for boiler generating banks, superheater circuits, heat-transfer surfaces, and pressure parts where the tube is expanded, bent, welded into headers, or assembled into boiler panels. The material is carbon steel with controlled chemistry, moderate tensile strength, and the inspection discipline expected for boiler service. It is commonly associated with IBR work in India when the boiler maker, consultant, or inspector requires ASME Section II material and Form III-C/approved certification. The standard’s buying language matters because “minimum wall” means the supplied tube must not fall below the ordered wall after tolerance; this differs from average-wall tubing and directly affects pressure calculation, bending allowance, and remaining wall after corrosion allowance. SA192 is typically selected when a plain carbon steel boiler tube is adequate for the design temperature and pressure. If the boiler designer requires higher strength medium-carbon tubes, SA210 Grade A1 or Grade C may be used instead; if alloy creep resistance is needed, the selection moves to SA213 T11/T22/T91 or similar alloy grades; if the item is process pipe rather than boiler tube, ASTM A106/ASME SA106 is usually the comparison. Equivalent-grade cross-reference should therefore be application-based: SA192 aligns with ASTM A192 and boiler-tube service, not with IS 1239 water pipe or ASTM A53 general galvanized pipe. In RFQs, specify OD, minimum wall, length, quantity, heat treatment condition, straight or U-bent requirement, IBR requirement, third-party inspection, marking, packing, and whether eddy-current, ultrasonic, flattening, flaring, hardness, or hydrostatic tests must be witnessed. Buyers should also confirm whether the boiler fabricator needs tubes normalized, cold-drawn, or hot-finished; whether bend radii and ovality are controlled; and whether tube ends need special preparation for expansion into tube sheets. The commercial risk in SA192 procurement is not just price but traceability: missing heat numbers, ambiguous wall basis, non-IBR paperwork, and incomplete test records can stop a boiler job even if the tube physically fits. RP Sales treats SA192 as a certified pressure-part item, so quotations should align the mill source, inspection route, documentation package, and delivery lot with the boiler maker’s approved vendor list. When substituting SA210 for SA192 or vice versa, do not rely on both being “boiler tubes”; compare carbon and manganese chemistry, yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, hardness, allowable stress in the design code, and the drawing’s material note before approval.
SA192 scope and common applications
SA192 covers seamless carbon steel boiler and superheater tubes ordered to minimum wall thickness. It is used for heat-transfer tubing in high-pressure boilers, especially where a plain carbon steel tube satisfies the design temperature and code allowable stress.
Because SA192 is a tube specification, it should be ordered by OD and minimum wall, not by nominal pipe size and schedule. This distinction is critical when matching tube sheets, bending machines, and boiler drawings.
Chemical composition reference
- Carbon: 0.06–0.18% typical SA192 range.
- Manganese: 0.27–0.63% typical range.
- Phosphorus: 0.035% max typical limit.
- Sulphur: 0.035% max typical limit.
- Silicon: commonly 0.25% max depending on current specification wording.
Mechanical properties reference
- Tensile strength: 325 MPa minimum typical requirement.
- Yield strength: 180 MPa minimum typical requirement.
- Elongation: 35% minimum typical longitudinal requirement in 50 mm.
- Hardness: controlled by specification to maintain formability and boiler fabrication suitability.
- Flattening, flaring, flange, hardness, and hydrostatic/NDE tests may apply by size and purchase requirement.
Equivalent grades and substitutions
SA192 is the ASME counterpart of ASTM A192/A192M. It is normally compared with SA210 for medium-carbon boiler tubes and with ASTM A106/ASME SA106 when the item is pipe rather than tube. Do not substitute ASTM A53 or IS 1239 for boiler pressure parts.
