The theoretical weight of a cylindrical steel pipe is derived from its volume multiplied by the density of carbon steel. The standard accepted density for mild steel (MS) is approximately 7850 kg/m³. The formula subtracts the wall thickness from the outer diameter to find the average diameter, then multiplies by the wall thickness, Pi (π), and density.
For quick reference, here are the theoretical weights (in kg/m) for standard IS 1239 ERW pipes across Light (Class A), Medium (Class B), and Heavy (Class C) thicknesses.

For quick reference, here are the theoretical weights (in kg/m) for standard ASTM A53 Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 pipes. Schedule 40 is the standard wall thickness for general purpose pressure piping, while Schedule 80 is used for higher pressure applications.
