Class B Medium = 8.37 kg/m · OD 88.9 mm · Light 6.76 / Heavy 9.95 kg/m
A 80 NB (3 inch) MS pipe weighs 8.37 kg per metre in Class B (Medium) — 6.76 kg/m in Class A and 9.95 kg/m in Class C per IS 1239.
Outside diameter is 88.9 mm. Figures below are theoretical plain-end weights. Compare all sizes on the full pipe weight chart.
80 NB is the 3-inch IS 1239 size at 88.9 mm OD. Medium class on this row is 8.37 kg/m, so a 6 m length is 50.2 kg. Panki hydrant-lateral buyers convert that stick mass into MT before they read the dated ₹/kg band. Quotes leave the Kanpur stockyard on an ex-warehouse basis.
| Class | Wall (mm) | kg/m | kg per 6 m | Approx. pieces / tonne |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Class A (Light) | 3.2 | 6.76 | 40.6 | 24 |
| Class B (Medium) | 4 | 8.37 | 50.2 | 19 |
| Class C (Heavy) | 4.8 | 9.95 | 59.7 | 16 |
Pieces per tonne ≈ round(1000 ÷ kg per 6 m length). Use for rough logistics only; actual count depends on exact length and mill mass.
Galvanized (GI) pipe is MS pipe with a zinc coating. Zinc typically adds roughly 3–6% mass over the plain-end MS weight depending on coating class and surface area. Use the MS figures below as the base; for GI orders expect a small uplift, or confirm coated mass on the mill test certificate (MTC).
W = (OD − WT) × WT × 0.02466, with OD = 88.9 mm for this size:
For wholesale supply of 80 NB (3 inch) MS or GI pipe from Kanpur, check the MS pipe price list for current rate bands, then send NB, class (A/B/C), length and tonnage via the RFQ form. We supply with mill test certificates. Thickness class reference: IS 1239 class thickness chart.
80 NB is the 3-inch row. The steel OD is 88.9 mm on Light, Medium and Heavy. That OD family also appears on ASME schedule pipe, with other walls.
IS 1239 Part 1 walls on this bore are Light 3.2 mm, Medium 4.0 mm, and Heavy 4.8 mm. Light here shares the 3.2 mm wall with 65 NB Light. Medium wall 4.0 mm matches 40 NB Heavy and still differs in OD and kg/m.
The kg/m figure is the plain-end theoretical mass for 80 NB. It is not a working-pressure stamp. It is not the coated GI mass. It is not a socketed length.
The site fire-system BOQ uses 80 mm or 100 mm NB for hydrant lateral feeds and 80-150 mm NB for industrial sprinkler mains. Those typical NBs do not pick the class. The approved hydraulic design does.
Open the pipe weight chart for 65 NB and 100 NB neighbours. Open the class thickness chart when a PWD take-off prints millimetres and hides kg/m.
Specify 80 NB IS 1239 when the water, sewage, or fire drawing names 80 mm NB class tube. A Panki factory or PWD buyer should pin that drawing line to the enquiry.
The site fire-system table lists 80-100 mm NB for hydrant laterals and 80-150 mm NB for industrial sprinkler mains, with IS 1239 Heavy class on those typical rows. Inside the 2020 CPWD Part V book, Clause 7.3 names mild-steel Heavy C-class IS 1239 through 150 mm.
Do not buy this row as 3-inch Sch 40 A106. The site schedule comparison uses 88.9 mm OD and Sch 40 wall 5.49 mm at 11.29 kg/m. Medium class here is 4.0 mm and 8.37 kg/m.
Do not buy 80 NB as IS 4270 casing. The borewell pages start steel casing at 100 mm NB. An IBR steam-pipe buy follows its approved metal and Form III-A.
Sugar-mill raw-water and ash-water headers may use 80 NB ERW when the utility spec says IS 1239. Boiler banks stay on SA192 or SA210. Printing-cylinder shops stay on precision tube.
Mass columns come from this size row. The rupee columns copy the 24 May 2026 MS and GI bands used on the Kanpur price lists.
| Class | Wall (mm) | kg/m | kg per 6 m | MS ₹/kg | GI ₹/kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light (A) | 3.2 | 6.76 | 40.6 | 49-55 | 59-67 |
| Medium (B) | 4.0 | 8.37 | 50.2 | 52-58 | 63-71 |
| Heavy (C) | 4.8 | 9.95 | 59.7 | 55-63 | 69-77 |
Whole-stick counts that stay below 1,000 kg are 24 Light, 19 Medium, or 16 Heavy. Sixteen Heavy sticks equal 16 × 59.7 = 955.2 kg. Nineteen Medium sticks equal 19 × 50.2 = 953.8 kg.
A 3-inch line that says only fire pipe and Heavy still omits the governing standard and wall. Coating and inspection documents are missing too. Lock each field.
For a worked Panki hydrant-lateral take-off, suppose the approved drawing lists 48 lengths of 80 NB Heavy GI. The black Heavy stick is 59.7 kg, so forty-eight sticks are 48 × 59.7 = 2,865.6 kg, or 2.866 MT black.
Apply the site 3-6% zinc uplift: 2,865.6 × 1.03 = 2,951.57 kg to 2,865.6 × 1.06 = 3,037.54 kg coated. If a separate Medium packing group holds 16 lengths, its theoretical black mass is 16 × 50.2 = 803.2 kg.
Floor(1000 ÷ 59.7) gives 16 Heavy sticks below one theoretical tonne, at 955.2 kg. That 2.866 MT lot is below the 10-tonne Clause 9.1(b) floor, so single-tube ±10% remains the mass rule.
Black Heavy at ₹55-63 per kg (24 May 2026) values 2,865.6 kg at 2,865.6 × 55 = ₹1,57,608 to 2,865.6 × 63 = ₹1,80,533. Medium black at ₹52-58 on the 803.2 kg group is 803.2 × 52 = ₹41,766 to 803.2 × 58 = ₹46,586.
GI Heavy on that 48-length lateral at ₹69-77 per kg on the coated band is 2,951.57 × 69 = ₹2,03,658 to 3,037.54 × 77 = ₹2,33,890 before GST. Put the hydrant class on the RFQ with the drawing attached.
GST 18% extra sits on the fire-pipe steel line. The buying-guide desk answers an RFQ inside 4 working hours. Freight to a Lucknow PIN sits outside the dated band.
A specification mismatch happens when a 3-inch Sch 40 seamless length is issued against an IS 1239 Medium PO. Gauge wall: 5.49 mm versus 4.0 mm. Mass per metre is 11.29 kg versus 8.37 kg.
Red paint does not prove an 80 NB hydrant line has the ordered class. If an approved drawing or CPWD-scoped specification calls for Heavy C-class, a 40.6 kg Light stick does not meet that wall line.
For Medium, subtracting 10% from 50.2 kg gives 45.18 kg; adding 10% gives 55.22 kg. The 59.7 kg and 40.6 kg theoretical values belong to Heavy and Light table rows, but markings must confirm either class.
A receiving error can place 65 NB with an 80 NB lateral because Light walls match at 3.2 mm. Gauge OD: 76.1 mm versus 88.9 mm. Weigh the Light sticks: 34.5 kg versus 40.6 kg.
A fork tine on the mouth can mash a bevel land. Fit protectors and lift away from prepared ends before a Panki or Lucknow run.
Clause 9.1(b) of IS 1239 Part 1:2004 is the mass clause used on the 45.18-55.22 kg Medium band. Welded Medium and Heavy wall under Clause 9.1(a) may run + not limited and −10% on this 80 NB row.
From a 4.8 mm Heavy wall the −10% floor is 4.32 mm. A 4.0 mm Medium reading is below that Heavy floor and should put the length on hold even when 88.9 mm OD matches.
Licensed 80 NB tube still carries the February 2022 acceptance test: hydrostatic at 5 MPa, or eddy-current as the alternative. A project may also name an installed-system hydro test. Keep that site step off the mill test record.
IS 3589 starts at 168.3 mm OD. Do not stretch this 88.9 mm row into a trunk-main standard. See the IS 1239 versus IS 3589 comparison when a BOQ jumps past 150 NB.
Under the DPIIT IBR forms index, steam pipe uses III-A, boiler tube uses III-B, and mountings use III-C. Those labels do not make an 80 NB hydrant or water tube an IBR item.
Panki is about 12 km from Bartan Bazar. A factory hydrant or PWD buyer there should send the 80 NB drawing and class with the enquiry. State finish and the crane limit on the same note.
Lucknow sits about 80 km out on NH-27, the distance the site uses for that drop, and the Lucknow steel pipes page covers the route. A 2.866 MT Heavy lot can ride that corridor when the PIN, access limits, and unloading method are on the RFQ.
Hydrant crews should open fire-system pipe before they pick the metal. Zinc 80 NB belongs on GI pipes in Kanpur. A PWD package can follow the PWD tender list.
Black 80 NB sits with MS ERW in Kanpur; the city landing is steel pipes in Kanpur. Outstation 3-inch lots to Patna or Gorakhpur put 40.6-59.7 kg on each 6 m stick, depending on class.
Neighbour rows live on 65 NB pipe weight and 100 NB pipe weight. Keep 88.9 mm written beside 3 inch on every 80 NB line.
