The Right Buyers for IS 1239 MS Pipe in Kanpur

IS 1239 MS ERW pipe shows up in water and plumbing scopes, in gas lines, and in general fabrication, across Kanpur and the surrounding UP industrial belt. The Light, Medium, or Heavy label only identifies a wall-thickness class. It does not by itself establish that a pipe is suitable for a pressure, buried, gas, structural, or fire-service duty. MS ERW Pipe RFQ Checklist: What Your PO Must State

Most price disputes start from an incomplete PO, not from the market. State every item below so you can check the quotation against the material that arrives.

• NB with class: nominal bore plus Light, Medium, or Heavy. Class is a wall-thickness designation, not a grade.
• Steel grade: YST 210, YST 240, or YST 310 as named on the drawing. Whether a given grade and class combination is offered is confirmed in the quotation.
• Length and ends: the required length and end finish (plain, bevelled, or threaded). A cut length is included only when the quotation names that work.
• Finish: black, painted, or hot-dip galvanised with the zinc-coating callout under IS 4736 stated separately.
• Inspection documents: the required mill or inspection certificate, heat traceability, and BIS marking or licence details where applicable.
• Inspection: whether a named third-party agency will witness loading at the point stated in the quotation.

Worked Example: Turning a Rs/kg Band Into a Per-Length Cost

Pipe is priced per kilogram but budgeted per length. Take 50 NB Medium class: OD is 60.3 mm and the canonical Medium wall at this bore is 3.60 mm. The site weight formula gives kilograms per metre as (OD minus wall) times wall times 0.02466. That works out to (60.3 minus 3.60) times 3.60 times 0.02466, which is about 5.03 kg per metre. A 6 m length therefore has a theoretical mass of about 30.2 kg.

Apply the table band for 50 NB Medium, Rs 53 to Rs 60 per kg. At 30.2 kg, one 6 m length costs about Rs 1,601 to Rs 1,812 ex-warehouse Kanpur before tax. A historical budgeting illustration dated 24 May 2026 multiplies those figures by an 18% tax input (Rs 1,601 × 1.18 ≈ Rs 1,889; Rs 1,812 × 1.18 ≈ Rs 2,138). • Treating class as grade. A Heavy-class YST 210 tube is not stronger steel than a Medium-class YST 310 tube. Specify both properties on the PO.
