What Are SS Pipes?
Per ASTM A312 and ASTM A269, stainless steel pipes and tubes are corrosion-resistant tubular products made from austenitic chromium-nickel alloys. The 300-series stainless steels (304, 316, 321, 347) contain a minimum 16% chromium and 8% nickel per AISI classification, forming a self-healing chromium oxide passive layer that protects against corrosion in a wide range of chemical environments. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between SS 304 and SS 316?
SS 316 contains 2-3% molybdenum in addition to chromium and nickel, providing significantly better resistance to chloride corrosion and pitting. SS 304 is the general-purpose grade for most chemical environments. SS 316 is specified when chlorides, seawater, or aggressive acids are present. The L-grades (304L, 316L) have lower carbon content to resist intergranular corrosion during welding.
What is the difference between ASTM A312 and ASTM A213?
ASTM A312 covers austenitic stainless steel pipes for general service — ordered by NPS and schedule. ASTM A213 covers seamless stainless and alloy steel tubes for heat-exchanger and boiler service — ordered by OD and wall thickness. The metallurgical requirements are similar but A213 has additional requirements for flattening, flaring, and hardness testing.
Can you supply electro-polished or bright-annealed SS pipes?
Yes, we source electro-polished (EP) and bright-annealed (BA) stainless steel tubing for pharmaceutical, semiconductor, and food-processing applications where surface finish is critical. EP finish achieves Ra ≤ 0.8 μm, and BA finish achieves Ra ≤ 0.4 μm.
