    3. Seamless Tubes — Manufacturing & Buying Guide
By Ajay Jaiswal · IS · 28 yrs

A seamless tube is hot-pierced from a solid steel billet on a Mannesmann mill — no weld seam. The result is uniform wall thickness and isotropic strength, which is why seamless is mandatory for high-pressure steam (IBR boilers), critical hydraulic systems, and sour-service oil & gas. In India, seamless boiler tubes are specified to IS 6286, ASME SA-179/SA-192/SA-210/SA-213, or DIN 17175 depending on temperature and pressure regime.

    Hot-piercing vs cold-drawing

Hot-piercing produces a "mother hollow" at ~1200 °C: a heated round billet is pushed over a piercer plug, then sized and stretch-reduced through a series of stands. This is the standard route for boiler tubes, line pipe, and structural seamless sections.

Cold drawing takes a hot-pierced mother hollow and pulls it through a die over a fixed mandrel at room temperature. Result: tighter OD/ID tolerances, smoother surface finish, and improved mechanical properties. This is the route for hydraulic cylinder tubes, instrumentation tubing, and any application requiring ±0.05 mm tolerance.

IBR-grade boiler tubes — what to specify

    • Service temperature and pressure regime (these select the grade)
    • Material: carbon steel (SA179, SA192) or alloy (SA210 Gr A1/C, SA213 T11/T12/T22)
    • Outer diameter and wall thickness in mm
    • Length: SRL (single random) 4-7 m, DRL (double random) 7-14 m, or cut-to-length
    • IBR Form III-C certification: required for any installation under Indian Boiler Regulations
    • TPI (third-party inspection) by SGS, Bureau Veritas, Lloyds, or buyer-nominated agency

Common seamless grades — quick reference

    SA179: cold-drawn, low-carbon steel. Use for heat-exchanger tubes, condenser tubes up to 425 °C.

SA192: minimum-wall seamless carbon steel. Use for boiler tubes in stationary boilers up to 510 °C.

SA210 Gr A1: medium-carbon seamless. Use for boilers and superheaters up to ~530 °C.

    SA213 T11/T12: 1.25 Cr / 0.5 Mo alloy. Use for superheaters and reheaters up to ~580 °C.

    SA213 T22: 2.25 Cr / 1 Mo alloy. Use for high-temperature superheaters up to ~650 °C.
