SA210
/glossary/sa210ASME specification for seamless medium-carbon steel boiler and superheater tubes.
SA210 is seamless medium-carbon boiler and superheater tube in Grade A-1 and Grade C. Kanpur sugar mills copy the drawing grade, not a stock nickname. Its ASTM A210/A210M-26 usual furnish spans 12.7 to 127 mm OD with 0.9 to 12.7 mm minimum wall. IBR tubes take Form III-B; Form III-C covers mountings and fittings. RP Sales quotes SA210 ex-warehouse Kanpur with GST 18% as the budgeting basis, and the tax invoice carries the rate actually in force.
In detail
SA-210 is the ASME specification for seamless medium-carbon steel boiler and superheater tubes in Grade A-1 and Grade C. Grade A-1 tensile on this site is 415 MPa min; Grade C is 485 MPa min. ASTM A210/A210M-26 usually furnishes 12.7 to 127 mm OD and 0.9 to 12.7 mm minimum wall. The approved boiler drawing selects the grade. IBR tubes take Form III-B; Form III-C covers boiler mountings and fittings.
What SA210 is, and what it is not
SA210 is a tube specification, not a pipe specification. Indian RFQs write SA210 or SA-210; the ASTM publication is A210/A210M. The active ASTM store listing retrieved 2026-09-05 is ASTM A210/A210M-26, titled Standard Specification for Seamless Medium-Carbon Steel Boiler and Superheater Tubes.
The public scope covers minimum-wall seamless medium-carbon steel boiler tubes and boiler flues, including safe ends, arch and stay tubes, and superheater tubes. The abstract states this type is not suitable for safe ending by forge welding, and it names grades A-1 and C, with different chemical and tensile requirements.
Tubes shall be killed steel and made by the seamless process, marked hot-finished or cold-finished. Surface condition belongs on the order. Tension, flattening, flaring, hardness, and hydrostatic or nondestructive electric tests shall be made on specimens. Superheater tubes shall withstand expansion, beading, forging, welding, and bending.
SA210 is not SA192 minimum-wall carbon boiler tube and not SA213 chrome-moly alloy tube. It is not ASTM A106 / ASME SA-106 pipe, not ASTM A53, and not IS 1239 ERW water tube. Commodity MS pipe from the Kanpur yard does not become SA210 by adding an MTC.
Who should specify Grade A-1 or Grade C
Specify SA210 when the approved boiler drawing names Grade A-1 or Grade C for that component. Water walls, economisers, generating banks, and carbon superheater circuits stay on the grade the designer wrote. That allowable-stress lookup sits in the purchased ASME Section II-D edition, not on this page.
Grade A-1 on the SA210 standard page has 0.27% maximum carbon and 415 MPa minimum tensile. Grade C has 0.35% maximum carbon and 485 MPa minimum tensile. Yield on that page is 255 MPa min for A-1 and 275 MPa min for Grade C. Those figures are not a pressure rating. A schedule number alone does not fix a pressure rating.
Do not specify SA210 for IS 1239 water lines, GI plumbing, fire hydrants, or borewell casing. IS 1239, galvanised pipe, and IS 3589 cover those duties instead. Do not specify SA210 as NPS times schedule pipe; order boiler tubes by OD and wall.
Do not swap Grade C onto an A-1 drawing because the yard has C. Do not swap SA213 T11 or T22 into a carbon bank because alloy stock is late. Substitution changes allowable stress, forming, and welding and needs the boiler designer.
SA210 grade comparison for Kanpur boiler RFQs
Use the table to match the drawing grade before the PO. Chemistry and strength columns reuse the call-outs already tabulated on the SA210 standard page. The last column states the usual furnish size band for the two SA210 grades, and the ordering action for the three related grades a Kanpur buyer might confuse with SA210.
| Grade | Chemistry | Tensile min | Yield min | Size or action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SA210 Gr A-1 | 0.27% carbon max | 415 MPa | 255 MPa | 12.7 to 127 mm OD |
| SA210 Gr C | 0.35% carbon max | 485 MPa | 275 MPa | 12.7 to 127 mm OD |
| SA192 | Carbon, minimum wall | 325 MPa | 180 MPa | Order as SA192, not SA210 |
| SA213 T11 | 1.25Cr-0.5Mo | 415 MPa | 205 MPa | Order as SA213, not SA210 |
| SA213 T22 | 2.25Cr-1Mo | 415 MPa | 205 MPa | Order as SA213, not SA210 |
Usual minimum wall on the ASTM A210/A210M-26 abstract is 0.9 to 12.7 mm, though the mill may furnish other diameters within the rest of that specification. The abstract states that mechanical property requirements do not apply below 3.2 mm inside diameter or 0.4 mm thickness. Confirm the drawing OD times wall before asking the mill for a non-standard size.
How to specify SA210 on an RFQ
Head the enquiry as a boiler-tube line, not a pipe schedule line. Attach the boiler drawing or the generating-bank schedule. Within 4 working hours, RP Sales responds with a technical and commercial SA210 offer against that drawing or schedule.
- Standard: ASME SA-210 / ASTM A210, Grade A-1 or Grade C as on the drawing. Do not write boiler tube alone.
- Size: OD and minimum wall in mm, not NB times class and not NPS times schedule. Usual furnish 12.7 to 127 mm OD, wall 0.9 to 12.7 mm.
- Process and condition: seamless tube, hot-finished or cold-finished per the drawing. End finish: plain end or prepared for expansion into the tube sheet.
- Length: drawing length, random-length acceptance, or cut-to-length. Quantity in metres and MT. Straight or U-bent.
- Coating: none unless the fabricator asks for a transit coat. This is not a galvanised product.
- Tests: tension, flattening, flaring, hardness, and hydrostatic or nondestructive electric test (ASTM A210/A210M-26 abstract).
- Documents: EN 10204 3.1 MTC as standard; 3.2 when TPI is named. For the IBR route, ask for Form III-B on the tube heat, and Form III-C separately if a mounting or fitting rides on the same PO. Heat number on tube and challan.
- Inspection: name SGS, Bureau Veritas, Lloyds, TUV, or the buyer-nominated IBR Inspecting Authority; RP Sales coordinates the visit at the Kanpur yard once the RFQ names the agency.
- Delivery basis: quote ex-warehouse Kanpur by default, or a defined FOR destination when named. GST 18% extra, with end caps, labelled bundles, and preserved heat identity on the packing line.
Worked mass example for a 50.8 mm A-1 tube
For an SA210 tube bundle, theoretical plain-end steel mass uses W = (OD − t) × t × 0.02466 kg/m, with OD and wall in millimetres. The constant 0.02466 is π × 7850 / 1,000,000 for carbon steel at 7850 kg/m³. The mill weighs the bundle.
Take OD 50.8 mm and wall 3.6 mm, a row already on the boiler tube price list. W = (50.8 − 3.6) × 3.6 × 0.02466 = 47.2 × 3.6 × 0.02466 = 4.19 kg/m. A 6 m length is 25.14 kg. One hundred lengths are 2.514 MT before bends or stub ends.
SA210 A1 at 50.8 × 3.6 mm is ₹118-142 per kg ex-warehouse Kanpur as of 24 May 2026, GST 18% extra. That steel line is about ₹2.97 lakh to ₹3.57 lakh before GST and freight (2.514 × 118,000 = 296,652; 2.514 × 142,000 = 356,988). SA210 C on the same row is ₹133-162 per kg as of 24 May 2026. Do not treat the C band as an A-1 quote.
Stock items dispatch in 3-7 days; mill-direct standard grades take 14-21 days, as listed on the glossary lead-time entry. TPI and IBR inspection extend that window. Ask the quotation to state the inspection-adjusted dispatch date. A sugar-mill outage schedule should book that inspection-adjusted date, not the bare stock-dispatch figure.
Common mistakes on SA210 orders
A recurring failure on Panki orders is a carbon-for-carbon swap: a drawing that says Grade C gets filled with Grade A-1 because the yard has A-1 in stock. IBR inspectors catch the grade on Form III-B, and the tube then fails site registration.
The second failure is ordering SA210 as 2 inch Sch 80 pipe. Boiler tubes are OD times wall. Pipe schedules belong on ASTM A106 or A53 lines, not on generating banks.
The third failure is an MTC 3.1 offered as a substitute for Form III-B on a tube. Form III-C covers boiler mountings and fittings, and it is a different form from the tube heat certificate. A Type 3.2 mill certificate is not Form III-B and is not Form III-C. See IBR Form III-C and the Form III-C guide for the scope that form actually has.
The fourth failure is offering SA192 as equivalent because both are boiler tubes. SA192 tensile on this site is 325 MPa min. Forming and allowable stress differ. The boiler designer must approve any change.
The fifth failure is average-wall supply against a minimum-wall calculation. The A210/A210M-26 abstract is a minimum-wall specification. State the wall basis on the RFQ. A weighbridge check that ignores the heat number on the tube stencil misses a mismatch that the MTC and challan would otherwise catch.
Standards and compliance for SA210
ASME SA-210 / SA-210M sits in Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section II Part A. This page cites SA-210 by designation and uses the ASTM A210/A210M-26 store abstract for public scope, process, tests, and usual size.
The ASTM abstract requires tension, flattening, flaring, hardness, and hydrostatic or nondestructive electric tests. Superheater tubes must stand expansion, beading, forging, welding, and bending. Mechanical properties do not apply below 3.2 mm inside diameter or 0.4 mm thickness.
For an IBR tube route, the forms index used across this site's boiler grades assigns the tube certificate to Form III-B, keeping Form III-C for boiler mountings and fittings; the recognised Inspecting Authority signs it. That routing is the same for SA210, SA192, and SA213, but the specification, grade, and heat number entered on the form are unique to the medium-carbon A-1 or C tube on the SA210 order.
Grade A-1 and Grade C sit in ASME Section II-D at different allowable-stress values because of the carbon and tensile spread in the table above. A Kanpur RFQ that only writes "boiler tube" without naming A-1 or C leaves that stress lookup undone.
Buying SA210 tube in Kanpur
Sugar-mill outage buyers around Panki and the wider UP belt name SA210 A-1 or C for water-wall and economiser replacement sections, since those duties run carbon medium-temperature steam rather than the superheater alloy circuits. Fabricators source against an ITP with stage-wise inspection and IBR Form III-B on the tube heats. See seamless boiler tubes in Kanpur, sugar mill boiler tubes, and steel pipes in Kanpur.
A shutdown BOQ that mixes an economiser bank in Grade A-1 with a higher-strength Grade C circuit should list each size and grade on its own RFQ line; the SA210 A1 economiser example on the boiler tube price list works the mass and cost for one such line at 50.8 mm OD and 3.6 mm wall. Do not let one blended grade line stand in for a BOQ that names two.
RP Sales dispatches SA210 boiler-tube bundles with heat identity preserved daily from Kanpur across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi NCR, and Uttarakhand. Panki, Dada Nagar, and Jajmau pickups for boiler-tube heats route from the same Bartan Bazar / Basanti Nagar (208014) yard.
The Kanpur steel market page covers the wider IBR-grade niche at Bartan Bazar / Basanti Nagar (208014); carbon SA210 boiler tube may sit as yard stock or mill-direct within that niche. Mill-direct standard grades keep the 14-21 day window noted above, and that window lengthens when TPI or IBR inspection is booked.
IBR Form III-B on an SA210 heat
An IBR SA210 tube heat needs Form III-B plus the MTC. Steam pipes use Form III-A, while boiler mountings and fittings use Form III-C. Copy the form the inspecting authority named on the approved plan.
Form III-B should show manufacturer, heat, SA-210 A-1 or C, OD, wall basis, chemistry, mechanicals, and the Inspecting Authority stamp. Match those fields to the stencil on the tube and the dispatch challan. A heat mismatch is a hold, not a paperwork delay.
The ITP may assign test witnessing to TPI. Neither a TPI witness nor a Type 3.2 countersignature substitutes for Form III-B; only the recognised Inspecting Authority's signature on that form satisfies IBR. Book the inspecting authority before the mill dates the heat.
PWD and JJM water lines do not need Form III-B. Keep those RFQs on IS 1239 or IS 3589. A sugar-mill shutdown that mixes a water header with a boiler bank should list each line with its own form.
SA210 versus SA192 and SA213 on one boiler
One bagasse boiler can carry three tube families. Carbon water walls may be SA192 or SA210 A-1. Higher-strength carbon circuits may be SA210 C. Superheater and reheater alloy sections move to SA213 T11 or T22. The drawing, not the yard list, assigns each circuit.
SA192 tensile on this site is 325 MPa min and yield 180 MPa min. That is below SA210 A-1 at 415 MPa tensile. Forming and welding procedures differ. Do not treat a stronger tensile as a free upgrade.
SA213 T11 and T22 mechanicals on this site are yield 205 MPa min, tensile 415 MPa min, elongation 30% min. The alloy chemistry, heat treatment, and filler metal are the reason those grades exist. Carbon SA210 does not cover a T22 metal-temperature line.
Compare offers on SA192 vs SA210 only after grade, OD, wall basis, IBR form, and inspection match. See sugar mill boiler tubes for the outage buyer path.
Tests, heat treatment, and the release pack
The ASTM abstract requires tension, flattening, flaring, hardness, and hydrostatic or nondestructive electric tests. Expansion, beading, forging, welding, and bending remain required capabilities for superheater tubes. Forge-welded safe ends are outside this type.
Hot-finished or cold-finished belongs on the order. Heat treatment, when the purchased edition requires it, belongs on the MTC. Ferritic chrome-moly cycles belong on SA213, not on this carbon grade.
The release pack for a Kanpur dispatch is the MTC, Form III-B when the line is an IBR tube, the TPI release when the RFQ named an agency, the packing list, and the e-way bill or railway receipt. For an SA210 release, budget GST at 18% extra; the tax invoice applies the rate in force.
Send the drawing grade, OD, wall, quantity, and destination PIN on the RFQ. Seamless pipes in Lucknow and steel pipes in Prayagraj describe city delivery from the same yard.
Where you'll meet this in procurement
You will meet SA210 when a buyer, consultant, or mill quote names a governing specification. Confirm which revision applies, what tests the standard requires, and whether the grade on the MTC actually matches the SA210 call-out on the RFQ before you lock commercial terms.
