Fire hydrant systems in India are designed to IS 13039 (External Hydrant System — Code of Practice) and installed against National Building Code 2016 Part 4 (Fire and Life Safety) requirements for the relevant building category. The pipework that carries the water — yard ring main, internal wet-risers, pump-discharge headers — is almost universally mild steel to IS 1239 (Part 1) Heavy Class. Why IS 1239 Heavy Class — and not Medium or Light
Fire hydrant systems run wet — the ring main and risers hold water under standby pressure (around 3.5 bar) at all times, jumping to working pressure (7-10 bar typical, more on taller buildings) when a jockey pump kicks in or when the fire pump starts under demand. The pipe is also constantly in contact with stagnant water, which slowly corrodes the bore from inside.
The heavier wall of IS 1239 Heavy Class buys two things against that duty: corrosion allowance (the wall thins over years and starts from a thicker baseline) and pressure-cycling fatigue margin (the heavier section distributes the pressure-induced hoop stress across more metal). Light and Medium class pipes do not carry that margin and are not accepted by Indian fire authorities for hydrant duty. The same physics applies in the external yard ring main, which additionally has to survive any external mechanical loading from being buried.
Standards stack — what the design references
- IS 13039 — Code of Practice for External Hydrant System. Sets the layout, hydrant spacing, ring-main sizing logic, pump-house design, and flow-rate and pressure performance requirements for the external yard hydrant network around a building.
- IS 1239 (Part 1) — MS pipe specification. The pipe itself. Heavy Class wall thickness, hydrostatic test pressure, dimensional and chemistry requirements. ISI-marked product carries the manufacturer's BIS licence number on the MTC.
- National Building Code 2016, Part 4 — Fire and Life Safety. Building-type-specific requirements for internal wet-risers, hose-reel cabinets and pump-room sizing. Read alongside the Tariff Advisory Committee Fire Protection Code.
- State Fire Service and project NOC. The local fire service issues the construction-stage and occupancy-stage NOC. They want to see ISI-marked pipe on the BOQ and the MTC packet in the project file.
