Hydraulic cylinder barrels demand three things: tight bore tolerance, low surface roughness, and consistent wall thickness. This guide ranks tube types for Indian hydraulic OEMs by precision, pressure capacity, and cost.

Ranked recommendations

DIN 2391 St52 (E355) Honed and Burnished Tube

DIN 2391 St52 honed tube delivers bore tolerance of H8 (±0.03 mm on 80 mm bore) and surface finish under Ra 0.4 microns after skiving and roller burnishing (SRB). The 355 MPa yield strength handles working pressures up to 250 bar at standard wall thicknesses. This is the default choice for Indian hydraulic OEMs building construction, agricultural, and industrial cylinders.

Best for: Standard hydraulic cylinders for construction equipment and industrial presses (up to 250 bar)

IS 3601 H8/H9 Grade Precision Tube

IS 3601 H8/H9 grade provides bore tolerances comparable to DIN 2391 at 10-15% lower cost because the BIS standard has wider acceptance of surface finish (Ra 0.8 vs Ra 0.4). Indian OEMs building agricultural cylinders, tipping cylinders, and low-pressure actuators (under 160 bar) often use IS 3601 to reduce material cost.

Best for: Agricultural and low-pressure hydraulic cylinders where cost matters more than finish

EN 10305-1 Cold Drawn Seamless (CDS) Tube

EN 10305-1 CDS tubes start as hot-finished seamless tubes and are cold drawn through a die for improved tolerances. They provide better concentricity than welded-and-drawn alternatives. For high-pressure hydraulic cylinders (250-400 bar), CDS tubes offer the wall uniformity needed to prevent barrel expansion under load. Requires in-house honing.

Best for: High-pressure hydraulic cylinders (250-400 bar) requiring in-house honing

CDW (Cold Drawn Welded) Tube per IS 3074

Per IS 3074 and DIN 2393, CDW tubes start as ERW tubes and are cold drawn for tighter tolerances. They cost 30-40% less than CDS tubes and work well for light-duty hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders up to 100 bar. The weld seam is not a concern at these pressures when properly drawn and stress-relieved.

Best for: Pneumatic cylinders and light-duty hydraulic actuators under 100 bar

Bottom line

For most Indian hydraulic cylinder OEMs, DIN 2391 St52 honed tube is the standard. Use IS 3601 for cost-sensitive agricultural cylinders. EN 10305-1 CDS for high-pressure service above 250 bar. CDW tubes only for pneumatic and light-duty work.
