    3. IS 1239 Steel Pipe Supplier — Spec, Grades, Procurement
    📅Last reviewed May 6, 2026

IS 1239 steel pipe is the standard Indian ERW mild-steel tube for water, sewage, gas, and general engineering duty. Buyers should specify NB, class, grade, finish, end condition, hydrotest, MTC, and BIS traceability before comparing supplier rates.

Why specify this with RP Sales

We've been stocking and dispatching steel pipes from Kanpur since 1994. Every dispatch ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate by default; third-party inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Lloyds, TÜV) is arranged on request before the truck loads.

Pan-India dispatch from our Kanpur warehouse — typically 3-7 working days for in-stock sizes. Talk to Ajay or Ayush directly for a written quote.

What does IS 1239 cover for ERW steel pipe buyers?

IS 1239 Part 1 covers welded mild-steel tubes for water, sewage, gas, and general engineering. It defines nominal bores, light/medium/heavy wall classes, test requirements, finish options, and marking expectations. It is not a boiler-tube approval route for steam service.

For Indian procurement, IS 1239 is the default language for commodity MS ERW pipe up to the familiar plumbing and low-pressure industrial range. A quotation should not stop at “ISI pipe”. State IS 1239 Part 1, nominal bore, light/medium/heavy class, grade, black or galvanized finish, end condition, and quantity. That gives every supplier the same bill of material and prevents thin-wall commercial stock from being compared with certified medium class.

The standard is often used for water lines, sewage, low-pressure gas, handrails, fabrication, and utility piping. It is governed by BIS licensing, so supplier credibility depends on mill origin, heat traceability, and a clean MTC. RP Sales quotes IS 1239 material with mill documents and can align the dispatch with product pages such as the ERW hub, glossary definitions, and related size or schedule guides.

Use the standard citation visibly in the purchase order. We cite IS 1239 Part 1:2004 because it anchors the class and test language. If the pipe is outside its size range or needs higher pressure, move to IS 3589, ASTM A53, or seamless standards rather than stretching IS 1239 beyond its intent.

Which IS 1239 grade and class should procurement specify?

Class selects wall thickness; grade selects mechanical strength. Medium class YST 210 or YST 240 suits most water and low-pressure service. Heavy class adds wall margin. YST 310 is ordered when drawings need higher yield strength or structural assurance too.

Buyers frequently mix class and grade. Light, medium, and heavy are dimensional classes. They change wall thickness and weight per metre. YST 210, YST 240, and YST 310 are strength grades referenced through the Indian steel-tube family. A complete RFQ therefore needs both: for example, “IS 1239 medium class, YST 240, black, plain end, 6 m lengths.”

For normal water distribution, medium class is the most common procurement baseline because it balances price, handling, and hydrotest margin. Light class should be reserved for non-critical, non-pressure, or protected applications where the drawing permits it. Heavy class is worth the premium where the line may see mechanical abuse, threaded connections, rough site handling, or conservative maintenance planning.

If a supplier quotes a significantly cheaper pipe, compare the theoretical weight. A lower rate per metre often comes from a lighter class or non-certified material, not better buying. Ask for MTC, marking, and BIS license source before issuing the PO.

Is IS 1239 suitable for galvanized, threaded, and coupled supply?

Yes. IS 1239 pipe can be supplied black or hot-dip galvanized, plain end or threaded and coupled. Galvanizing improves corrosion life; threaded supply helps plumbing and field assembly. Confirm coupling count, thread protection, zinc finish, and MTC before dispatch approval.

Galvanized IS 1239 pipe is common for outdoor plumbing, fencing, pump-house lines, and mildly corrosive environments. The zinc layer delays rust, but pressure and mechanical capacity still come from the base wall class. Do not treat galvanizing as a substitute for medium or heavy wall where the design requires thicker pipe.

Threaded-and-coupled supply should state the thread type, one coupling per length, and thread-protector requirement. Pipe delivered with damaged male ends can stop site work even if the body is correct. Plain-end pipe is better where field welding or fabrication cut lengths are planned. Bevel-end requirements should be written separately because bevel preparation changes fit-up and handling.

For corrosion-sensitive projects, ask whether galvanizing is done after threading and whether threads are passivated or protected. Inspect random couplings before dispatch and keep the invoice description precise so future replacements match the installed lot.

What documents should an IS 1239 supplier provide with dispatch?

Ask for GST invoice, packing list, mill test certificate, heat or batch traceability, dimensional declaration, hydrotest confirmation, and BIS source details. For tenders, add third-party inspection. Refuse vague “ISI quality” claims without standard, class, grade, and documented origin evidence always.

A proper IS 1239 dispatch should be auditable after unloading. The MTC must map to heat or batch markings and confirm chemistry, mechanical basis, dimensional checks, and test compliance. The packing list should match piece count, length, and bundle weight. If the project is government, utility, or institutional, add pre-dispatch inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas, or the nominated agency.

Documentation also protects the buyer from substitution. If the PO says IS 1239 medium YST 240 but the MTC or invoice says commercial ERW pipe, reject before installation. Once pipe is cut, threaded onsite, or welded into a line, evidence becomes harder to prove. Good suppliers make acceptance checks easy by dispatching documents with the truck.

IBR documentation is different. IS 1239 is not the route for boiler steam service; do not accept a promise to “arrange IBR later”. If boiler approval is needed, specify seamless boiler material at quotation stage.
