Food, dairy and pharma pipework must follow the approved process, corrosion and hygienic design. The line schedule should name the ASTM category, grade, dimensions, roughness and finish, joining method, traceability, inspection and validation evidence. This guide helps turn that schedule into a Kanpur RFQ without treating 304L, 316L or one Ra value as universal.
Use Kanpur as a proposed enquiry or collection point only when the current written quotation confirms it. Require the offer to identify material location, availability, finish and documents, freight, risk transfer, legally applicable taxes and dates. No stock range or corridor timing is promised here.
Why sanitary stainless is different from commercial SS pipe
Commercial pipe and sanitary tubing can differ in dimensional, surface, weld and inspection requirements. Copy the exact Ra, finish route, weld-bead condition, measurement method, sampling and acceptance criteria from the approved hygienic specification. Do not assume A312 has one bore roughness or that every A270 or pharma line requires the same 0.8 or 0.5 μm limit.
Grade selection — SS 304L vs 316L
The 304L / 316L decision is the single biggest cost lever in sanitary pipe procurement. 316L runs roughly 25-35% more expensive per kilogram than 304L, so the right answer depends on the chloride load the pipe will see, not on blanket over-specification.
| Grade | Typical service | Selection note |
|---|---|---|
| SS 304L | General dairy CIP loops, beverage transfer, food-process water lines | Lower-carbon variant of 304. Select only after the process designer reviews chemistry, temperature, chloride exposure, fabrication, cleaning cycle and governing hygiene requirements. |
| SS 316L | Citrus juice, brine-CIP dairy, nutraceutical and pharma WFI / purified water lines | Molybdenum can improve chloride-pitting resistance, but 316L is not a universal application rule. Use the approved process and material specification. |
| SS 304 (full carbon) | Non-CIP utility lines — chilled water, plant air, instrument-air piping | Use only where the approved utility or process specification names this grade and addresses fabrication, corrosion, cleanability and contact risk. |
Specification landscape — ASTM A312, A270, A554 and 3-A
ASTM A312 / A312M
Seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel pipe — the workhorse spec for SS 304L and 316L process pipe. Covers chemical composition, mechanical properties, hydrostatic testing and the optional 100% eddy-current non-destructive test.
ASTM A270 / A270M
Sanitary tubing for dairy and food processing. Adds requirements for surface finish (Ra ≤ 0.8 μm internal), bore concentricity and end-condition control beyond A312. A270 Pharmaceutical Grade (SF1, SF4) further restricts inclusion content.
ASTM A554
Welded stainless steel mechanical tubing — used for sanitary railings, equipment frames and CIP-skid manifold builds where the tube is not a primary product-contact path.
3-A Sanitary Standard 63-04
The dairy industry's accepted reference for product-contact surface finish, drainability and weld profile. Most Indian dairy and pharma procurement specs cite 3-A as the surface-finish standard alongside the ASTM dimensional spec.
Joint selection — clamp / ferrule vs orbital weld
Clamp-and-ferrule (tri-clamp) joints take the assembly apart in seconds — ideal for sections that need regular access for inspection, instrument calibration or product changeover. The tradeoff is the gasket: every gasket is a potential leak path and a potential biofilm trap if the joint is over-tightened and the gasket extrudes into the bore.
Orbital welding gives a continuous bore with no gasket and a weld bead that, done properly, sits flush with the parent metal. The investment is the welder qualification, the purge gas control, and the bore-camera inspection of the completed weld. Most modern dairy and pharma plants run an orbital-welded main loop with tri-clamp tee take-offs at the instrument and sampling points.
Buyer RFQ categories
Dairy plants
For dairy enquiries, provide the approved product and CIP line schedule, chemistry, temperature, grade, dimensions, finish, joint method and validation evidence.
Nutraceutical and pharma
For pharma or nutraceutical enquiries, copy the exact material, ASTM category, finish, inspection-document and validation requirements from the approved specification.
Beverage bottlers
For beverage enquiries, let the approved corrosion and hygienic design control grade, OD, wall, finish and joining method; product category alone does not select them.
Spirits and brewery
For spirits and brewery enquiries, provide the actual process chemistry, cleaning cycle, temperature, grade, dimensions, finish and validation plan.
Buying sanitary stainless pipe in Kanpur
For a Kanpur enquiry, send the approved line schedule, grade, OD, wall, finish, joining method, inspection plan and authorised destination. Ask the current offer to identify the proposed manufacturer, material location, availability, traceability and finish evidence, freight, risk transfer, taxes and dates. Read the steel pipes Kanpur page, seamless pipes Kanpur page, Lucknow corridor page and Kanpur steel market guide for local buying practice, and walk the paperwork on our MTC sample page.
Who should specify sanitary tubing, and who should not
Product-contact duty calls for an approved hygienic design, but ASTM line, grade and Ra limit remain project-specific. Confirm cleanability, drainability, corrosion, fabrication, validation, traceability and finish measurement in the line specification.
Utility and product-contact services can have different approved materials. Do not infer A554, 304, 304L or 316L from a service label; use the process and corrosion assessment and obtain any price difference from a current quotation.
Grade, spec and finish: selection table
The table is an RFQ comparison, not a stocking position or a universal grade-to-finish map. The approved specification controls every selection.
| Grade | Governing spec | Internal finish (Ra, µm) | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| SS 304L | ASTM A270 | ≤ 0.8 | Dairy CIP loops, beverage transfer, food-process water lines |
| SS 316L | ASTM A270 SF1 | ≤ 0.5 | Citrus and brine duty, nutraceutical and pharma WFI loops |
| SS 304 | ASTM A312 | 1.6 (commercial) | Non-contact utilities: chilled water, plant air, instrument air |
Worked example: taking off a 60 m CIP loop
Start with the approved cut plan and offered mill length; do not assume six metres or a universal spare percentage. Reconcile fittings, weld coupons, facing and site allowance, then compare current quotations for the designer-approved grade and exact Ra requirement. Product chemistry and validation, not this example, decide between 304L and 316L.
RFQ checklist for sanitary SS pipe
These nine items support a current, comparable technical and commercial response without assuming availability or timing.
Also attach the process line tag and approved revision of the corrosion and hygienic specification. Name the product and cleaning chemistry, concentration, temperature range, drainability requirement, welding procedure, passivation scope, roughness measurement method, sampling and validation owner. This lets a supplier quote the actual boundary conditions while the process designer and quality team retain selection and acceptance authority. Record the approved revision and any supplier deviations before the purchase order is released. Retain the signed review, measurement records and approved exception list with the validation file for receipt, installation and later change control.
- ASTM line and grade. A312 or A270 with 304L or 316L, plus SF1 where pharma duty applies.
- OD and wall. Copy the outside diameter and wall in millimetres from the approved sanitary line schedule; do not substitute a boiler-tube size or a surface-finish value.
- Finish. Copy the exact internal and external Ra, finish route, weld condition and acceptance method.
- Length and ends. State the required or offered length and the approved end or joint preparation.
- Quantity. Lengths per line with the loop tag numbers for traceability at receipt.
- Test records and traceability. State the inspection-document type, results, identity and traceability level required by the specification.
- Finish proof. Profilometer trace for internal Ra and the 3-A compliance letter where specified.
- NDT. Eddy-current and hydrostatic records where the spec calls them.
- Delivery basis. Ask the offer to state material location, collection or destination basis, freight, risk transfer, taxes and dates.
Common procurement mistakes on sanitary pipe
In practice, sanitary failures start at ordering. Buying commercial A312 pipe for a product-contact line leaves a 1.6 µm bore that CIP chemistry cannot reliably clean. Welding full carbon 304 in the product path sensitises the joint. Mixing 304L and 316L lengths on one loop without heat segregation destroys the traceability the audit packet depends on.
At installation, over-tightened tri-clamp joints extrude the gasket into the bore and create the biofilm trap the sanitary finish was meant to prevent. At receipt, insist on the profilometer trace rather than a catalogue Ra claim, and check that the heat on the tube matches the heat on the MTC before the lengths enter the store.
Key points
- Use the ASTM category, grade and finish named in the approved line schedule.
- Select grade from the actual corrosion and process assessment, not an application shortcut.
- Select joints from the approved hygienic design and validation plan.
- Define traceability, test records, finish evidence and 3-A evidence where specified.
- Take off lengths from the approved cut plan and offered length before ordering.
Documentation expected with sanitary SS pipe
- ASTM A270 or A312 MTC. Full chemical and mechanical analysis against the heat, with the mill BIS / ASTM licence number.
