Third-Party Inspection (TPI) involves an independent agency like SGS or Bureau Veritas witnessing material tests at the mill.

What are the stages of a typical Third-Party Inspection?

TPI is usually booked at the P.O. stage. The inspector visits the mill, checks ID marking (Heat No), witnesses chemical sampling (drilling), and tensile testing.

1. Pre-Inspection Meeting: Confirm scope and standards.

2. Visual & Dimensional Check: Verify against P.O.

3. Witness Sampling: Cut chips for chemical analysis.

4. Witness Testing: Tensile, bend, impact tests.

5. Release: Issue Certificate (e.g., Certificate of Conformity).

  • Witness: Chemical Sampling
  • Witness: Mechanical Testing
  • Release: Certificate of Conformity (CoC)

Which TPI agencies are commonly used for steel inspection?

For steel imports into India, SGS, Bureau Veritas (BV), and Lloyds Register are standard. For European imports, TÜV is common.

SGS: Largest global network, strong in Asia.

Bureau Veritas (BV): Strong in France/Africa.

TÜV SÜD: Preferred in Germany.
